Updated 5 November 2026: local inference can provide offline operation and control over data, but neither privacy nor savings follows automatically from installing a model.
Start with one real task
Take a recurring task such as drafting a reply, summarizing a document or classifying support requests. Define what a correct result looks like. Compare a local model and a hosted model on the same examples, including failures and the time needed to check answers. Choose based on successful work, not parameter count alone.
Compare the full cost
Local costs include hardware, electricity, maintenance and your setup time. Hosted costs can include subscriptions, uncached input, cached input, output and tools. API billing and a chatbot subscription are different products.
Estimate monthly savings as avoided cloud spending minus added local running costs. Break-even months = incremental hardware cost ÷ positive monthly savings. For example, ₹40,000 of hardware and ₹2,000 net monthly savings gives 20 months. This is illustrative arithmetic, not a promise. If savings are zero or negative, there is no financial break-even under those assumptions.
Check where data travels
A local model can run without sending prompts to a provider. However, a surrounding app may use cloud inference, remote embeddings, web tools, telemetry or cloud-synced storage. Ollama documents local-only operation and cloud controls. Review the complete application and its enabled features. An offline test establishes offline functionality; it does not prove that nothing is transmitted when the network returns.
For hosted services, review the actual account's retention, access and processing settings. Choose the arrangement that meets your project requirements. Local operation still requires protecting devices, stored conversations and backups.
Try the smallest useful setup
After installing Ollama from its official instructions, ollama run llama3.2:3b selects the 3B text model, not a 7B model. Download it while connected, then test your intended offline workflow. Measure memory, latency and answer quality before buying hardware.
A hybrid setup can keep selected work local and send other tasks to a hosted model, provided the routing is explicit. Revisit the decision when your usage, model quality or provider rates change.
